How it works

Nobody changes what they already do

A WordPlayLeague Wordle league runs on the scores your group already posts. One person connects the channel; after that it runs on messages people were going to send anyway — no app to download, no account for players, nothing new to remember.

  1. 01

    Connect your group chat

The manager creates a Wordle league and points it at wherever the group already talks. That is the only setup step, and only one person does it.

    Group text

You get a number for the league. Add it to the thread like any other contact. Players reply YES once and never think about it again.

    Slack

Install from the Marketplace and pick a channel. Everyone already in that channel is already in the league.

    Discord

Invite the bot to a server and pick a channel. Same idea, same result.

  2. 02

    Everyone plays as normal

People paste their grid into the thread exactly as they always have. WordPlayLeague reads it where it lands — the score, the puzzle number and the grid itself — and records it. Nobody re-types anything.

That is why leagues on other tools die in week three: they ask every player to do a second chore, every day, forever. Here there is no second chore.

  3. 03

    The league runs itself

Standings, weekly winners, season races, divisions, promotion and relegation all update as scores land. The manager tallies nothing.

Day by day

Wordle scores land where they were already going.

The Latest tab fills in through the day as people post. Everyone who has not played yet sits at the bottom marked No Score, which is the quiet pressure that makes a group chat a league.

Post at 11:58pm and it still counts for that day. There is a three-hour grace window on each side of midnight, so players in other time zones are not punished for geography.

Week by week

A week, not a leaderboard.

Most Wordle leaderboards run on a lifetime average, which is settled by March. A week is not. Only your best five scores count by default, so a bad Tuesday can be thrown out — and a good Monday still matters on Sunday night, because the week does not resolve until it ends.

The best weekly total takes a weekly win, and weekly wins decide the season. Every week is its own race with its own winner, so somebody joining in week six is not out of it.

Managers set the minimum anywhere from three to seven scores and the season from two to six weekly wins. Full detail on the rules page.

Once you are big enough

Divisions, promotion and relegation.

At six or more active players a Wordle league can split in two, each division running its own season race.

Up from Division II

The top finishers move up, and the champion of Division II always goes up — that one is automatic, never a judgement call.

Down from Division I

The bottom drop down. The manager picks how many move each way, from one to three. The Division I champion is always safe.

Why it matters

A new player is not up against a three-year head start, and the back half of the table still has something to play for in November.

One person sets it up. Everyone else just keeps playing.

Takes a couple of minutes, and nobody in your group has to be told about it.
