What real group chats tell us about Wordle
Every score here was pasted into a family text thread, a work Slack channel or a Discord server, then picked up by a WordPlayLeague Wordle league. No names, no grids, just what the whole pile adds up to.

The shape of a day
Four is the number.
Most people land it in four, and three is a good day. A two is rare enough that the group chat notices, and a hole-in-one happens a handful of times a year across every league combined.
Average when solved: 4.00 guesses. Missed entirely: 2.7%. Holes-in-one: 7, out of 7,062.
The hardest words
Repeated letters are the real trap.
Not obscure words. Ordinary words with a letter used twice, because once a letter turns green most players stop looking for a second one.

A myth, checked
Wordle does not get harder through the week.
The New York Times crossword really does climb from an easy Monday to a brutal Saturday, and a lot of people assume Wordle works the same way. It doesn't. Every day of the week scores almost exactly alike.
Every day lands between 4.03 and 4.16 guesses (misses counted as 7). The spread is a tenth of a guess.
The first guess
The opener rarely gives much away.
Whatever word people start with, the first row is mostly yellow and grey. The game is decided on guesses two and three.
Post early or late?
Going last doesn't help.
In a group chat everyone can see the grids that came before theirs, so you might expect the last person to post to do best. Across every league they don't. Whoever posts first and whoever posts last score about the same.
Average guesses, misses counted as 7, across 846 league-days with four or more players.
How this was measured
Where the numbers come from
Each result is one player's score for one day's puzzle, read from the grid they posted. Someone in two leagues posts the same grid twice, so it is counted once. Puzzle answers come from the published daily solution. Nothing is sampled or estimated, and the page is rebuilt from the live data.
